Steve Lewis entered the music business after meeting Richard Branson in 1969, when both were teenagers. He is one of what Richard calls “the original gang” which established Virgin. During more than twenty years with Virgin Group, Steve was Managing Director of Virgin’s artist management company, Deputy Managing Director of the Virgin Records label and Managing Director of Virgin Music (Publishers) Ltd.
In 1993, Steve became CEO of the Music Division of Chrysalis Group Plc. Within 18 months of his arrival Chrysalis Music had replaced Virgin Music as the UK’s Top Independent Music Publisher (Source Music Week). After eight successful years at Chrysalis where Steve also established the Echo Label, he left to found his own publishing company, Stage Three Music. The company acquired catalogues of songs by Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Gerry Rafferty, Mike Oldfield, David Essex and others as well signing some of the most successful writers of the period.
Steve has served on the PRS Council, Music Publishers Association Council and the boards of the BPI, MCPS and AIM.
As well as leading both Virgin and Chrysalis to Top Independent Publisher positions in the UK for many years, Steve has twice been named ASCAP Publisher of The Year.
Steve currently offers advice and consultancy via his company Steve Lewis Services. He sits on the Boards of Nettwerk Music Group, Synchtank, Landr and
playDEFmusic and is External Advisor to the University of East London’s Music Industry Management BA course.
